Verizon Wireless Expands Ringback Tone Availabilty

[Verizon Wireless](http://vzw.com) announced today that the service is now available in Montana and Northern Wyoming. The service is now available across their entire national network.

For those of you who don’t know, ringback tones allow incoming callers to hear short clips of music instead of your standard ringing sound. Subscribers can choose different rings for incoming callers based on caller id, time of day, or group list. Still don’t get it?… Verizon provided a number to demonstrate their Ringback Tone service: 303-263-0013 (Denver-based).

In summary… for $.99/month and $1.99/song/year I can allow my callers to hear a music ringtone which I purchased for them. It is a ringtone which I can’t even enjoy lest I call myself; and only then can the ringtone be heard until voicemail picks up. I usually pick up in the first two rings; so my callers would barely get to hear the already short clip. At least the callers I ignore will have a nice jingle to listen to.

At the very least, for $1.99 I would hope that I could use the Ringback Tone as a standard ringtone. At least I can enjoy the music I licensed. If I were the music companies I would contract with the providers to replace ringtones across the board to stimulate record sales and launch promotions. Hell, marketers could push ads instead of music. Perhaps there is a business model here?

At [Flycell](http://www.flycell.com) we don’t even support Verizon. At least not yet…
