SMS Spam: Coming to a Phone Near You?
June 29th, 2005 | by amarfresh |The Feature has a great piece speculating on whether the mobile operators will allow junk SMS messages to be sent to their users. Unlike email, SMS is not free. Each time an SMS message is sent, a carrier is making money; at the expense of the recipient.
Would mobile operators look the other way on mobile spam, knowing they make a little extra money from each one? It seems unlikely — mainly because the damage would be much worse than any revenue gained.
More and more marketers are asking for mobile phone numbers. Also the adoption of ringtone and other mobile content services has skyrocketed (in the USA). Is it only a matter of time before corporations ruin SMS as they did with email? Since there is a clear cost associated with SMS I would think that laws similar to the US Junk Fax Law are soon to appear.
Do I see a “Do Not SMS” list coming? I think so.
