Hands-Free Driving Laws Are Not Good Enough

July 25th, 2005 | by amarfresh |

Chicago lawyer, Gerald Skoning opines that the real danger of mixing driving and cell phone usage is dialing.

The new law’s exemption for cell phones with ”hands-free” adapters or speakers has resulted in a sales bonanza for that niche industry, but has done little to advance the cause of traffic safety. After all, the most dangerous point in a cell phone call is the dialing phase when the driver’s attention is split between the madly thumbing the keypad and watching the road ahead.

What most users don’t realize is their phone’s ability to do voice dialing (or even speed dialing). I know of users who don’t even use their address book. COME ON PEOPLE!!! Let’s not make this a “survival of the fittest nerdiest” contest.

There are already reports that talking and driving is dangerous. Let’s not give legislators more fodder to restrict our usage while driving. Last thing we need is the banning of cell phones altogether in cars. Hell, in my home state of NJ legislators are seeking a ban on smoking and driving. Absurd.

Know your phone.
