More MMS Interoperability: Leap Announces Picture Messaging Interoperability with Cingular and U.S. Cellular

July 25th, 2005 | by amarfresh |

Leap Wireless announced MMS interoperbility with Cingular and US Cellular (with Verizon on the horizon).
Cellcos are finally getting a clue. The SMS train is slowing down and they are priming the MMS engine by finally offering the ability for users on different carriers to send pictures and sounds to eachother. What took them so long? Were they waiting for the ubiquity of multimedia phones? Walled-garden politics? Broadband? Did they just want to milk SMS for all that it was worth?

Whatever the reason may be, users should be happy as long as the messaging rates don’t increase. What remains to be seen is what carriers will allow to flow to and from their MMS services. They still have the ability to limit message size and attachments, as well as the ability to “cripple” a phone’s ability to process different attachments.
