Greedy cellcos take a lions share in SMS donations

August 12th, 2005 | by amarfresh |

Much like Live8, The Olympia Niger Relief Concert seeks to raise money and distribute tickets via an SMS lottery.

Users who text the word AFRICA to 57143, along with their name and valid email address, will donate 2 Euros to the Niger relief cause and be entered to win 2 tickets to the concert. Winners will be notified via email, so it is important to use an email address which is checked regularly.

Here is the kicker- to donate 2 Euros it is going to cost mobile users 5 Euros because the cellcos won’t lower their “revenue share.”

The text message will cost you 5 euro. The Phone companies, despite requests and warnings that they may have to take serious flak on this, will not lower their charges. So the breakdown of that 5-euro is as follows: We want you to know where this money is going:

Text Message Breakdown
2 Euro to Concern (Niger Relief)
2 Euro to your phone operator
0.87 Government Tax (like they dont take enough!!!)
0.13 to Number Provider (Flycell dropped ALL their profits on this and are only covering costs)

Total 5 Euro.

So it’s totally up to you guys as to whether you want to text this. The people of Niger need this money, unfortunately, the operator wont lower charges…. I wish I could change it, I can’t. But when we are talking to the Media we will let them know of the breakdown.

You would think that for a charity event the operators would suck it up. It appears that they didn’t lower their rate at all. Certainly it doesn’t cost them 2 Euros to process the billing and text message. Even Flycell, the SMS provider/integrator, chose not to make any money on this. I can understand that the operators want their hands in the till for wallpaper and ringtone sales, but for a charity cause!?!?

Perhaps they don’t want to set a precedent of lowering their rates. My “spidey-sense” tingles of collusion at the operator level.

The operator’s are taking a hard line on this, in a press release, one of the major operators in Ireland is reported to have said “We don’t negotiate with charities!” :)
