Gmail Signup with Mobile Phone; Google SMS Alerts Coming

August 25th, 2005 | by amarfresh |

You no longer need an invite to get Google’s GMAIL. You just need a mobile phone.

It doesn’t seem that many people have noticed, but Google has opened up their Gmail accounts so you can get one without an invite, IF you have a US mobile phone number, they’ll send you an invite code via a text message. They’re doing this ostensibly as a way to protect against invalid spammer accounts.

Russell points out that what they do with your phone number internally is unknown. Google does tell us the number is saved in your profile for or upcoming Google mobile services like secure password recovery and SMS alerts.

If you don’t GMAIL yet, you should. (I route all my personal email through them, and can even change the reply-to address so that you can keep your vanity email address.) If you want an invite let me know.
