In Malaysia Cell Porn = Jail time or $$$

This might be the most ridiculous news item of the day.

Here in New York left wingers complain about baggage searches in the Subway. The goal: to thwart would-be terrorist bombers. In Malaysia the police are authorized to spot-check mobile phones for pornography.

Phone shop operators who provide downloading services for porn could also be charged for its possession, which is illegal in this Southeast Asian country, the New Straits Times newspaper reported. The offense carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison and 50,000 ringgit (US$13,292) in fines.

Seems a bit heavy-handed; gestapo, if you will. Sadaamesqe perhaps? Looks like they need a dose of American democracy. OK, maybe that’s not funny. Either way, I’m sure it will prompt mobile users to change their porn viewing habits.

Mental note: don’t ever go to Malaysia.
