Mobile Handset Bug Fixed Automagically OTA
August 30th, 2005 | by amarfresh |I found this press release rather interesting. Recently, a co-worker with a new LG 8100 (Verizon) needed to drop his phone off at the local Verizon store in order to receive a software upgrade which restored the bastardized MP3 player/media player function to his phone. The upgrade, which he learned of via howardforums and not Verizon, for some reason could not even be initiated by calling #228; Verizon’s pull method for OTA roaming and software upgrades. What crap! This sweet stereo, video, bluetooth, EV-DO phone needed a serial connection for a software upgrade which Verizon still hasn’t informed him of.
KDDI in Japan is using InnoPath’s device management solution to automate software upgrades without user intervention or inititation. Recently they patched buggy software on thousands of phones saving $42 to $72 per handset.
With InnoPath’s DeltaUpgrade Plus(TM) device management solution embedded on their handsets, KDDI’s subscribers were able to receive a software patch to fix the bug remotely and seamlessly in a minute’s time. KDDI is the first carrier to have issued an automatic update to mobile subscribers in Japan, and the first to adopt an automatic firmware update solution via a “Push” update, as opposed to a “Pull” update that users must initiate themselves.
