Motorola Brings WiFi to City Buses

Cedar Rapids Iowa how has mobile WiFi on city buses. Together with the Trapeze Group, Motorola has implemented new mobile broadband solutions that will enhance the security and enjoyment of riders on the city’s buses, as part of a city-wide revitalization project. In addition to providing riders with free Internet access, the technology is used to provide video surveillance, vehicle tracking and streaming advertising services.
The new mobile data system, powered by Motorola’s mesh networking technology and Trapeze intelligent transit solution (ITS) software, enables streaming video of advertising, news and transit schedule information to the city’s fleet of 50 buses. Using this system, bus dispatchers from Five Seasons Parking and Transportation, the company which operates Cedar Rapids’ public transportation fleet, can also wirelessly monitor real-time security video on buses while they are in motion, as well as when they are parked.
In NYC, the MTA hopes to use a mobile information network to allow bus riders to better estimate arrival times and delays. Unfortunately, they never mentioned mobile WiFi as part of the offering. Looks like Cedar Rapids has one up on us.

Unfortunatly I am yet to find a wifi equipped bus in Cedar Rapids that actually works. You can connect to the network just fine but getting any sort of internet connection seems near impossible. To top it off the bus drivers have no idea what’s going on, some of them don’t even know the wifi exists on their bus.
