Law proposed to make open biz WiFi illegal
November 4th, 2005 | by amarfresh |Westchester County, NY County Executive, Andy Spano is proposing a new law. One that will require businesses to “lock-down” their wireless networks. Meaning that users will be required to know a username, password, and/or security keys to gain access to any business’ WiFi network. The law is intended “to protect the public from crimes such as identity theft and other consumer fraud.”
Is he really looking out for the consumer; making it more difficult to do cellular handoffs and WiFi VoIP? Thanks, but no thanks, I say.
Someone at Techdirt commented, “What kind of backward thinking is that? That’s like banning the use of ATMs at night because you might get robbed. There are going to be security risks no matter what the situation.”
Security risks no matter what the situation. Indeed. So what really is going on here? Perhaps WiFi ubiquity will put the kibosh on Spano’s and Cablevision’s Westchester Telecom project.
