How to promote ringtone sales.

Don’t know if this is a “break-even” proposition, but it is certainly a great way to increase ringtone sales and music awareness. MocoNews has a write up on the interesting collabro between the band Coldplay and tv show CSI.

In this instance TV show CSI: NY — an off-shoot of the popular CSI show — will feature a realtone of Coldplay’s new single “Talk”, and in the following ad break promotional messages will appear telling viewers how to purchase and download the realtone.

Remember when The Matrix came out? Neo and friends had a cool stilleto/slider action cellphone which everyone wanted. The Fox show, 24, prompted the creation of ringtones to mimic the cellphones used on that show. What CSI/Coldplay is doing is similar. The ringtone isn’t about the show or a quote from the show, but rather is a prop in the show. The idea of having the same ringtone (cellphone or any accouterments) as the character/actor in your favorite show is very appealing.

Like I stated before, I wonder if the cost of setting up the promotion could possibly result in compensating sales. Unlike the 24 example, the tone is not unique to CSI, and may not necessarily appeal to the entire CSI viewership like the way the 24 ringtone appeals to 24 viewers. Still, it’s better than having one of the actors read, “Pick up the phone, it could be a clue.”
