More on the CSI-Coldplay Product Placement

November 30th, 2005 | by amarfresh |

Reuters has more info on the Coldplay ringtone product placement in the CSI:NY show.

Series star Carmine Giovinazzo’s phone will sound to the tune of Coldplay’s next single. It’s part of a cross-promotional agreement between CBS and Capitol Records.

Cross-promotional. I wonder how the deal is set up.

The Colplay single, “Talk” will also serve as background music throughout the show.

I wasn’t sure if I stumbled onto a commercial or the plot really was writtern (or re-written) with the intent of selling cell phone ring tones. I was utterly appalled. Having discovered the CSI shows a year or so ago, I’ve been a faithful follower of NY, Miami and Vegas. If this is a taste of what’s to come, that will certainly change. I’ve always been impressed by the creativity, intelligence, reality, and grit of these shows, but if the plot lines become the advertising medium rather than the COMMERCIAL BREAKS, you can count me out. And I’ll be telling all my friends. To CBS: We appreciate the prominance music has garnered in primetime shows in recent years — thanks for getting that message. But we already love Coldplay and are paying money to download their ringtones, so, what more could you be trying to accomplish? I understand TEVO could be hurting your advertisers, but, please, let the creative people do their jobs. Don’t compromise the integrity of these shows by selling out. It’s cheap and annoying, and I’m disappointed that you guys actually stooped to that level. It certainly put me off Capitol Records.
