Unstrung - Handhelds - BroadVoice Unveils Falcon - Wireless Networking News Wire

BroadVoice is planning on releasing a WiFi phone which also can access the GSM network. T-Mobile and Verizon already offer smartphones with WiFi capability, however they aren’t necessarily designed for VoIP applications. Companies such as Nokia and T-Mobile have already successfully tested seamless cellular-to-wifi handoffs; allowing the caller to “roam” between WiFi and cellular networks transparently. It is intereresting, although not surprising, to see this “dual-mode” initiative coming from a VoIP provider who has nothing but market share to steal. In areas with great WiFi coverage, a good marketing effort will certainly make waves for the cellcos.

The BroadVoice Falcon allows users to take advantage of BroadVoice’s unlimited VoIP calling plans using Wi-Fi networks. When the user is outside Wi-Fi coverage, the Falcon acts like a standard mobile phone using a separate account with a GSM service provider, such as Cingular, T-Mobile, O2, Orange, or Vodafone.
