Unwanted Cellphone Charges: Last year Jamster, This year Blinko
June 26th, 2006 | by amarfresh |Last year Jamster was in the news for deceptive billing and charging practices. This year it seems that Blinko, aka DirtyHippo, aka Buongiorno USA is the culprit.
A class-action suit has been brought against Blinko by a Chicago firm who states that the Blinko website “invites abuse.”
“A person can just go in there with (someone else’s) telephone number, put it in there, and suddenly a message is sent out to that phone,” he explained. “And if you don’t decline the message in the format that is required by this company, you’re bound to pay them.”
An interesting read with some real life examples…

my daughter is 16, loves her cell phone, and when on line, was curious about Blinko. Next thing she knew, she was getting a lot of txt messages from them. She tried to delete all and answer back NO, but that made no difference.
When we got the verizon wireless bill several weeks later, there it was, 9.99 charge for delayed charges, download service….when I called Verizon, they were able to look it up and see Blinko, but the phone number given to me was for m-cube.com, the billing company…First, they wanted my cell number so they could txt message me about the problem…NO WAY, I told them I did not want them anywhere NEAR my cell number…..THen, I was told that I would have to receive an email stating that they got my complaint, and then, some time later, another email would come with more details…run around seemed inevitable. Thankfully, Verizon said they would credit our account. I said do not accept anymore charges from that outfit…we shall see.

The same thing happened to me. Fortunately, I kept the e-mail they sent me having deleted my cell phone #, however, this does not seem to help in receiving reimbursement.
I never ordered the ring tone 3 months ago but all of a sudden was receiving horoscope text messages every day.
I texted back like I was told and they stopped.
All of a sudden (3 months later), my Verizon bill went up 9.99. I called them and explained, however, they insist I need to be reimbursed by Blinko.
I argued with Verizon saying that I was not billed over the last 3 months
when this all started so why would it all of a sudden be on my bill especially when I am not getting the service.
How did you get them to agree to your request of deleting the charge?
Thanks,
Cheri

It’s still happening — I have had my cell for 4 months. I paid the first two bills without question. — I called verizon, my last billing cycle — wondering why I was being billed 19.98 for services I do not use. I requested text messaging be shut off. // I also requested a refund, which they assured me would be reflected on next month’s bill.– QUEST WHAT? last months bill shows up — no refund –a new charge of 19.98 usage charge — txt. mes, and download. — I called again! I hope I have it resolved this time — I spent almost 35 minutes on the phone with verizon personnel — I again requested txt. mess. be remove from my phone// I again , asked for and — I was issued a instant reduction in this month’s bill. — So I’ll pay the amount quoted to me. — We”ll see what they do to me next month.

I used the # scott m. left for us, called Blinko and told them that I was under the impression of free ringtones not a 9.99 charge. I told them to disconnect immediately and was assured that this will be done. They are to email me with a disconnect confirmation # in a couple of days.

OK I TEXTED THEM BACK, TO STOP THESE TEXT MESSAGES I KEEP RECIEVING ABOUT MY HOROSCOPE , NO ONE HAS CALLED OR TEXTED ME BACK NOW WHAT? I CALLED THE # FOR SCOTT M, NO ANSWER INSTEAD IT SAYS TO WRITE A COMPLAINT FORM ON THE WEBSITE? WHERE IS IT? I TEXTED THEM MANY TIMES LAST NIGHT FOR THEM TO STOP SENDING THESE AND THEY KEPT SAYING THEY RECIEVED AN ERROR FOR ME TO SEND AGAIN, SO THEY CAN CHARGE ME AGAIN?? I TOLD THEM TO DISCONNECT THIS SERVICE ,I NEVER AUTHORIZED FOR THIS WEBSITE TO BE ADDED TO MY CELLPHONE AND REFUND THE CHARGES, WELL GUESS WHAT, THEY RECIEVED ANOTHER ERROR AND I REPLIED TO THEM TO STOP THIS!!!! NO RESPONSE

I just texted them back and told them to stop. This is the 3rd time I have requested this. I received an error reply which stated that I should go to http://www.care@blinko.com. I entered it on the computer and found that it was an email page. I filled it out and sent it off. I then found this site and called the 800 # that Scott gave. They want your cell # before they will even take you to the next phone menu. I entered my home # just to see what would happen. No surprise, they kept me on hold till I was finally disconnected!! Can the FCC get involved in any of this?

I have verizion too and I have been dealing with this problem for 8 months. I just recently called verizion and threatened to end my account if they did not help. They gave me a new number for blinko 866-626-2823 and called it with me. You must choose option 2 to speak to a real person. M-qube/blinko (same company) said that it will take 2 days to receive a responce for cancelation with a verification number. Verision noted the conversation. Once I receive the number verizion will give me a credit. Good luck!

Be aware that a similar set up appears to be happening with a company called Cell Life. They also use m-qube as their billing company. I was given the number 800-235-7105 to call. Just an automated answering service. I told them to stop the service…we shall see. I also sent a note to m-qube, not knowing they are just a billing company, to see what would happen there. this email address appears to be Customer_Care@m-qube.com.
Good luck to everyone with this issue.

I have been having problems with “premium” text messaging that I have repeatedly taken the steps told to me to have it canceled. They continue to send them anyway. Two a day at .50 a peice and my cell bill is astronomical.
Verizon claims it is a third party vendor and they have nothing to do with it. However, I received a text very shortly after I signed on with Verizon and received my new phone. I hit the “agree” button, having been tricked into thinking I was setting up my new cell service. They obtained my number through Verizon; Verizon does their billing and then reimbursed them my payment (customer service rep told me this). Obviously Verizon is very much involved if they are the ones billing me for the service.
I urge everyone to fill out a form online with the Better Business
Bureau and the FTC. It is very easy, much less time consuming than dealing with Verizon and not getting anywhere. I would like to see enough people flood these agencies so Verizon will stop putting others through this mess and expense. I am sorry to not have the BBB or FTC website available. I googled them. It’s a simple process and after I explained the problem to the BBB I copied it and just pasted it onto my FTC complaint to save myself the aggravation of explaining it for the zillionth time!!!

This outfit and Verizon are still at it. I may have the best one yet.
The cell phone is for my 80 year old mother in law - who lives downstate in VA. She is so hard of hearing she can’t hear the phone ring, and has no clue how to use the text messaging system. She uses the phone to make long distance calls to family during the “free” periods over weekends and at night. The “Premium Text Messaging” charges started in March (2@$7.99 each). Called Verizon 3/19/07 to complain and was told the amount would be credited to my account. Adjusted the amount I paid and sent in the check.
Just got my April bill. Verizon didn’t apply the credit, and charged me $5 for “Late Fee”. and you guessed it - this time there were 5 more “Premium Text Messaging” charges on the bill. Verizon gave me the 800-235-7105 number to call and “cancel”. To their credit, Verizon did credit my account for the full amounts in dispute - at this point over $57.
An interesting fact: Verizon has this company identified as “M Messenger”. When I did call the 800 number it identified itself as “SMS Message Services”. I got a British accented voice that requested the cell phone number and then said the service was cancelled but it could take up to two days for service to end.
Am also going to file a complaint with BBB and the FCC. This is an abomination!

I was sent an email saying I could get free ringtones for my daughter’s cell phone which happens to be a prepaid Nokia with Cingular. Well before all was said and done they charged my daughter over and over for her just to open the ringtones, depleting her minutes as well as charging her $9.99 for a subscription!!! NOTHING was said about a subscription for ANYTHING!! When I called to try and resolve this issue, they said we had to wait for 4-6 weeks for this $9.99 and refused to refund any costs that were charged for her to open the ringtones. They said that they dont charge for that which was an out and out lie because I saw it for myself! So, with her being a prepaid Cingular customer, she is out the monies spent on the minutes and had to buy more and she works hard for her money at our local Gold Star Chili restaurant. So, now she is not only out all the money they charged her, she has to spend more to replace what she lost and wait 4-6 weeks to ONLY get the $9.99 back!! This company should be SUED!!! They are scam artists!!

On June 28, 2007 I received a text message that stated, “in a few minutes you will receive a number. If you wish to subscribe to a daily joke service you do not need to respond. If you do not want this service you must return a text message to this number and include the number you received.” The number arrived and I returned it immediately. This was actually my first experience with text messaging; I had never used text messaging before. A short time later I received another text message welcoming me to Flycell. The next day, June 29th, I received another text message from Flycell. At that time I began to research Flycell and found a phone number and called for assistance. I could not obtain human assistance and the automated answering service sent me in circles, so I left a message requesting assistance. Two hours later, when no one called me, I called again and left another message. I left a total of six messages and seven hours later I received a phone call from a rude individual who called himself Ulysses claiming that I’d left “a hundred messages.” I explained my situation and he responded by asking me how he could help. Again I explained that I did not want any service nor did I order any service from Flycell. He contradicted me and stated, “yes you ordered services from Flycell.” I asked how I ordered it and he gave no response except asking again “how can I help you?” I asked to see the contract and he replied that it was not possible. Of course it’s not possible because I never entered into a contract with Flycell or any other cell phone service company except Alltel for basic phone service. I then asked that the service, which I did not order be canceled. He became very disagreeable and stated that the service to my phone had been ordered but that he could cancel it. I asked him to please do so. I then called my service provider Alltel and described the situation. The Alltel assistant was very helpful and admitted that he receives several calls each day complaining about the business tactics of Flycell. He also said that I did exactly the right thing in contacting Flycell. I thought the situation had been settled until I received my Alltel bill. There on the bill under “premium axcess downloads” was a charge for $9.99 from Flycell. I never downloaded anything nor did I request or authorize any service from Flycell or any other text messaging service. I called Flycell again and again no one returned my call until seven hours later. Again, it was Ulysses that called me and he refused to assist me. I asked to speak with his supervisor and he refused to allow my request. I found the number of the corporate offices of Flycell and called but was informed by an accountant, who was very helpful, that the offices had recently closed for the day and that he would have someone from customer service call me tomorrow. I have not received a call and therefore I believe my only recourse at this time is to file a judicial claim, so that a court can hear and decide what is right regarding my situation and perhaps hundreds of others who have been taken advantage of by Flycell and its’ parent company Acotel.

I was charged $19.99 to my parent’s phone line for premium text messages, who Verizon named M Messenger. They gave me a number to text ‘canel/quit’ to but I found this site first. I figured I didn’t want to pay the $.15 to send the message and then $.15 to receive a confirmation text back. I called both the 800-235-7105 (automated) line and canceled the number. But then I called the 866-626-2823 number to talk to a real person. She said she would cancel it and send me an email confirmation. So are all these companies actually the same? M Messenger/M Qube
The lady said the email will contain information on how to get a refund as Verizon already said they couldn’t as of right now.
So my question is how are people able to charge these subscriptions to other numbers? My parents barely even use the phone let alone know how to text message and all!
So now I will have to wait 2-3 days to see what will happen!

Has anyone else had this problem with verizon…i bought my teen daughter a pay as you go phone from walmart. I always buy her phone cards when her minutes get low but on this day I was stupid and called in their toll free number to add minutes using my debit card. That was done on 7-10-07. about 3 weeks later i started receiving overdraft charges from my bank one after another. i didn’t know what happened because I had money in my bank account. so i went on the internet and checked out my bank account. verizon charged me the 20.00 i had called in, then proceeded to charge me again 7 more times to the tone of over 150.00.over a 2 week period…some back to back. all these charges had depleated my account and all the charges i did went through paid…then charged me 35.00 for each one. so if you know how that works im screwed 500.00 plus in the hole with my bank which i have no money to fix. not to mention that my bank charges me 7.00 each day im in the negative to ya im totally screwed. anyway i called verizon who were very rude to me and basically blamed everyone or anyone on my part for doing it and when i told them it was totally impossible, they proceeded to ask me if i knew my daughter as well as i think. i guess just because she’s a teenager its really easy to place the blame off them. i was getting nowhere, and talked to 3 people. they were not going to refund me the money they had no permission, nor did i authorize out of my account. Have you ever seen the papertrail they have on your pre paid phone? go to their website and get an account to view your activity on your phone. I did and they have charges coming at you right and left for things you didn’t even download or subscribe to. they were basically stealing from my account and blaming it on 3rd parties. you will be charged fees, premiums, and subscriptions among other things. they also have a really screwed up way of charging for your usage. some are charged by the minute, and it will tell you the number called….then others are listed as between 15 seconds..and 50 seconds and they charge you .10. not the .10 a minute that you think your being charged. it was very difficult to understand. they were very sneaky as to getting the money out of my bank account without me realizing it. like for example. my account was 4.85…they stole 20.00 out of my bank account based on the fact that they keep your account numbers even if you do a one time call in. they have access to your account!!!!!!!and im sure they can use your numbers to charge minutes. looks like you did it….and they have your money. they stole the 20.00 and put it on my phone account….. gaveing me an account now of 24.85. then before you notice that your phone has unusual MORE minutes ..they charge you ALOT for things you didn’t ask for.in a matter of a few hours. By time their done, your down to somewhere around the 4.85 you knew you had…and you don’t know the diffence unless they do it at a time you do catch it. they then charged me again another 20.00 then charged the heck out of it again for things. out of the 20.00 that was added, they took about 1/2 of it or more. since they did put the minutes on your phone, it wouldn’t appear that they stole anything, and that you charged it and just want to get out of paying. they are very sneaky at this. At the time i finished arguing with these jerks, they ended the call by telling me i still have 11.59 left on my phone. my daughters phone lay beside me not being used for 4 hours. when i told my daughter that she had 11.59 left and to use them up because i was done with this company she said ok and went to place a call. well geee guess what? the 11.59 was gone. i went back on the website and saw that they had removed the remaining money out for yet another “premium payment” SO the 15.00 i had placed on the phone with a phone card 2 days ago is GONE by charges. She maybe used 3.00 out of the 15.00…if that. GOSH! who do you think is getting screwed with verizons pre paid phones. I AM IN HORRIBLE DEBT WITH MY BANK AND HAVE NO MONEY TO FIX IT! I have filed complaints with 2 places, but im sure that won’t get my money back. has anyone else had this problem? and if so, is there anything i can do about it?

If you were charged on your cell phone bill for ringtones or other mobile content that you never authorized and/or you were sent unsolicited SMS text messages and you want to fight back against these companies, get in touch with some class action attorneys.
These fellows are investigating unauthorized cell phone charges and wireless SMS text spam and might be able to help you:

I added my son to Alltel last June for a graduation present. He told me he was getting some weird texts from Alltel. I didn’t think much of it. I would think the Alltel Company would not scam their customers. If I want this Axcess crap I would have ordered it, right? Now, I’m getting Music trivia charges as a monthly subscription for $9.99. One billing actually had it on twice.
I have tried to contact Alltel’s phone customer service…which is just awful….to get it cancelled. You have to go through a zillion steps just to get a human voice. Technology is great…but please, most successful businesses know that the best customer service practices know that a human touch is best. I guess Alltel can’t handle people are afraid to. The first few times I would be on hold. It would even ask if I would do their survey, I said yes thinking they would call me back …I didn’t even get the survey. I even e-mailed my comment on their website. No response at all.
The walk in service lady was helpful and nice. She called to block Axcess so my son can’t download. They said you have to go to Axcess-settings-manage- and then delete subscription. It isn’t in my son’s cell phone at all. Yet I continue to get charged. But, a month later I don’t think it worked. Plus, I followed their directions.
So, I got my bill. And there it was. The Axcess charges again for some music trivia. I got through! It took many minutes but finally I got through to Alltel. They transferred me to the “tech” people in charge of Axcess. I was on hold for over 5 minutes. I timed it!!! (sigh) I hung up and gave up. I think if it is on my Alltel bill under Premium Axcess Purchase then Alltel should handle it. But, I have tried to get help for 4 months now.
What would happen if I just paid my bill minus the $9.99?
Alltel is a big sponsor at Kansas State University. But, I’m thinking at the next football game yelling out during their advertisement that “Alltel sucks!”

I have been getting charged $25.00 per month on my Suncom bill for the last four months. I asked Suncom about these charges and they told me it was for horoscopes. I do not get any messages for horoscopes on my phone but am getting charged for them. I asked them how I could get the charges stopped, and they gave me this website to go to waltermercadohoroscopes.com, so I went on the website, no number to call to ask questions or to get cancelled. If anyone has had this problem and knows what to do, please help me. Thanks
