Ringtone royalties: can we cut out the middleman?

An interesting post on ringtonia.com speaks of class action lawsuits filed against Sony Music for failing to pay ringtone and full-track download royalties.

Sony demands large amounts of up-front cash for ringtone deals as well as a hefty split of gross revenues. They claim marketing costs and artists\’ cut as reasons for their onerous digital music deals. Seems that they are keeping the money for themselves.

Amongst the plaintiffs of the class action suit are rock greats such as The Allman Brothers Band, Cheap Trick and one hit wonder, Elmo Shropshire, of \”Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer\” fame.
