New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday that NYC will upgrade the city’s 911 call centers to receive cell phone pictures and videos from New Yorkers with the big brass ones to record a crime they’re watching happening. It’s an admirable endeavor to be sure, but the technology won’t be so advanced — 911 callers will have to dial as usual and inform the operator they have pix or video, then the operator will provide transmission instructions.

John Feinblatt, the mayor’s criminal-justice coordinator, says, “[This is going to] help us solve crimes faster. It’s time to bring law enforcement into cyberspace. ”

Cyberspace? Welcome to the 20th Century, John. Let’s be careful out there.
