At a press conference on Monday, officials from the New York State Bridge Authority announced a new plan to install four to six cell phones on each of its Hudson Valley bridges, each with the U.S. National Suicide Hotline on speed-dial.

The plan was put into action as a result of two December 2006 suicides occurring on the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge in late December. Another died in a jump from the Tappan Zee Bridge in the same month. An NYS Bridge Authority spokesperson said the cell phones should work better than fences or nets at preventing suicides from Hudson Valley bridges.

No word yet whether or not the cell phones are eligible for those great “Get 15 Complimentary Ringtones” offers.
